Folk Rock duo Washer to perform

at Shumei's Summer Nights Concert Series,

September 25th at 7 PM (Friday )

Friday September 25th at 7 PM, Washer will perform at Shumei’s Outdoor Amphitheater.

Washer (sisters Katherine and Elizabeth Michalak) is a Crestone-based folk rock duo. With a sound that has been described as sophisticated and edgy, the acoustic duo delivers original songs with well-tooled lyrics, ranging from the self-effacing humor to poignant social commentary. Unafraid to break conventional popular music structures, they have written songs that are complex; yet still manage to be catchy and accessible (The name, incidentally, comes from ‘nut, bolt and washer’). Shumei, together with the Hazlrig Music House, hosts this ongoing concert series. Admission is $10, and all proceeds benefit Washer directly. The concert will be outdoors and the weather could be chilly, so bring your favorite blanket and snuggle up. In the case of rain, the concert will be moved indoors. Refreshments will be provided. For more information, call 256-5245.

Both girls picked up the guitar as teenagers, Elizabeth playing classical and Katherine playing fingerstyle and jazz. They attended many concerts at Crestone’s Hazlerig Music House, which ranged from classical to jazz to folk to Indian classical music. It was partially through these performances that they gained an appreciation for diverse and complex music.

In the fall of 2008, Patrick Hammond, former Nashville songwriter and current bassist for kirtan singer Krishna Das, approached the girls with an offer to help record a professional demo at his studio. Thus began a mentorship in which Patrick helped hone songwriting skills, both musically and lyrically, and added a better feel to their playing. He taught them to use sound equipment, studio recording and editing software, as well as offering constant and invaluable advice, insight, and humor. Patrick’s good friend, and professional recording engineer, Justin Walden, entered the scene in January of 2009 and brought his engineering skills, musical perspectives and perceptive ear to the project.

After completing the demo this spring, Washer turned their focus to booking shows on the Front Range, where they play on a regular basis. Their performance calendar is available at www.myspace.com/washerband, where you can also hear the songs they recorded with Patrick Hammond and Justin Walden.
