Sophia Dixon Dillo

Abstract painter and installation artist, Sophia Dixon Dillo, will be exhibiting at the Shumei International Institute from November 9th – December 31st, with a reception from 3-5 PM on December 21st. Dillo is in her final year at Colorado State University getting her Masters of Fine Arts in painting. Born and raised in San Rafael, California, she first came to Colorado to study Philosophy at The Colorado College in 1996. She has studied Thangka painting in Nepal, and pursued her interest in the arts at the Lacoste Ecole des Arts in France. She has also studied theology in Switzerland, and Buddhism as an artist resident at the German Zen Center, Johanneshof. She has exhibited at the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, the Lincoln Gallery at Naropa University, and the CSU Curfman Gallery. Her work is influenced by her meditation practice, as well as by artists such as Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly, Robert Ryman, James Turrell, Robert Irwin, and the writings of Agnes Martin. She writes, “In my painting I am drawn to abstraction because it tends to strip away the layers of meaning in which our everyday lives are embedded. Abstract images emphasize a space that exists before labeling, before thinking. Unobstructed by familiar icons, a bodily felt dialogue between the viewer and the work of art then might arise more easily.” To see examples of her work please visit www.sophiadillo.com.
