Sculptor and Painter John Mansfield October artist at Shumei International
Telluride based sculptor and painter John Mansfield will be on display for the month of
October at the Shumei Gallery in Crestone.
Mansfield’s work is both humorous and skillful. With an eye for Asian art Mansfield uses art to convey Zen philosophy and rice paper as an element in many of his designs. Mansfield's art symposium will be held Sunday October 16th starting at 3 to 5pm.
Mansfield 's interest in Asian culture comes from growing up as the son of a Naval Officer. His early childhood was in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor where Mansfield received an art scholarship that allowed him to attend the Honolulu Academy of Art. He studied both eastern and western art, learning appreciation as well as techniques. Later Mansfield lived in Japan where he had the opportunity to explore art galleries as well as studios. This early training provided exposure not only the techniques of eastern art, but also the philosophy that inspires.
Mansfield obtained a Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting from the California College for Arts and Crafts in 1966. Mansfield alternated between pursuing his Master's degree and teaching art skills to others, first in Virginia, then in London, followed by teaching at a Community College in Oregon. He received his MFA in Painting from the University of Oregon in 1970 and then moved to Telluride.
As the art scene in Telluride expanded, Mansfield was encouraged to make his work more accessible to a wider audience. It wasn't long before galleries around the country were representing his work. His work was so in demand that many pieces were sold even before they were completed.
Come meet the artist and learn more about his work and inspirations on Sunday October 16th starting at 3 to 5pm at the Shumei gallery in Crestone.
