Lynn Drake - Artist Symposia, July 19th (Sun) 3:00-5:00 PM

Lynn Drake's new sculptural work will be on display the month of July at the Shumei Gallery. Lynn has been full time resident of the Crestone/Baca area since 1994, and an active member of the Crestone Potters Guild since 1998. Currently she is involved with the new “Clay Art Center” in downtown Crestone, offering classes and studio space. Locally, her work is also on display at the Artisan Gallery downtown and Culture Clash in Salida.

Her soft undulating ceramic sculptures take the clay beyond preconceived limits, thereby giving the illusion of transformation into an entirely different medium. Lynn takes the clay to the limits of strength and durability making the edges of some pieces almost paper-thin and at the same time keeping the pieces stable and sturdy. She finishes her pieces using non-traditional methods with techniques that further stretch the imagination of the viewer.
Her works are about movement, the essence of a gentle breeze or a soft underwater current. She strives to reveal, in clay, that moment that is quickly lost again when the stillness returns. It is this movement, almost dance-like, that brings a balance to her vision of nature.

Her work has been selected for the “Art in Public Places” at the Republic Plaza in Denver and is included in selected private collections in the U.S. and internationally.

A gallery talk and reception with the artist will be held at the Shumei Gallery, July 19th from 3 to 5pm. Please join us. Refreshments will be provided. Call 256-5284 for further information.
