A retrospective of long time Crestone resident and clay artist Bertha Gotterup will be on display at the Shumei Gallery in Crestone for the whole month of August.
A symposium with Bertha will be on Sunday August 14th starting a 3pm. A reception will follow.
Bertha Gotterup is a renowned master potter of extraordinary skill. She has been creating beautiful and unusual works of art for 52 years and still continues to evolve as an artist. Her education started in 1959 at the college of San Mateo, and the Richmond Art Center in California. Bertha has worked with celebrated artists such as: Lita Gerrard, Ernie Kim, Paul Soldner, Michael Arntz, Hal Reigger, Marguerite Wildenhain, and Daniel Rhodes. Having taught workshops all over the country in studios and colleges, Bertha received many awards and has two pieces in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She came to Crestone in 1980 to work with Lindisfarne and has lived here ever since. The surrounding mountains inspire much of her art. She has taught many people in Crestone and believes it is very important to pass on her gift.
