If this building had been destroyed, Lama would not have been rebuilt.
LAMA DRAMATIC READING
AmmiLama productions will present a dramatic reading of the history of the Lama Foundation at Shumei on October 3rd. Richard Collier is Director, Holly Hoskins is Production and Stage Manager, Ammi Kohn is the writer and producer. The reading will take place at the Food Service Building.
Last month’s Eagle noted the many associations of Crestone residents with the Lama Foundation – in workshops, hermitages, Dances of Universal Peace, and the Build Here Now program after the Hondo Fire of 1996. Now Crestonians can hear the voices of Lama directly.
Ammi Kohn, a Crestone resident, created the drama from over a hundred hours of oral history interviews he collected at Lama and other locations since 1996. Much of the dialogue was extracted from the transcripts, lightly edited, and woven together to create this dramatic and fascinating story.
The Lama Foundation, located twenty miles north of Taos, is the only intentional spiritual community founded in the late 60s still operating in the Taos Valley, and, perhaps, in the United States. Alone among the Taos Valley communities, it built a firm foundation for continuity and survived the breakup of its charismatic founders. Its ecumenical vision lasted in spite of intense personal, spiritual, and psychological community conflicts. Lama was utterly destroyed physically in the horrific Hondo fire of 1996, which wiped out all but two buildings. Residents lost everything. Lama then underwent a difficult but successful rebuilding process. The two act dramatic reading will end with a short epilogue which brings the audience up to the present time and the Lama resident circle of 2009.
“If you are interested in communities, how they function, survive, and change, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to hear the words of the people themselves. Lama is still here. But will it undergo another incarnation, will it continue being relevant in our present society, so different from Lama‘s beginnings?” This question, posed by Ammi, is brought to life in the dramatic reading.
One of Lama’s founders, Hans Von Briesen, and the present Coordinator of Lama’s 2009/2010 resident circle, Jennifer Ormand, will be there to answer questions about the Lama Foundation.
Donations will be accepted to defray the cost of the production, and all proceeds will benefit the event directly. For more information contact 256-5284.
