David Berry
Biography


David Berry was assigned to the Council on Environmental Quality at the White House for six years after founding the Interagency Group on Sustainable Development Indicators and the Interagency Group on Industrial Ecology.  Both were responses to recommendations of the President's Council on Sustainable Development.  The groups raised awareness of environmental, social and economic trends, supported collaboration among Federal Agencies and encouraged action.

Mr. Berry has spoken on sustainability and industrial ecology in the United States, Canada, Germany, India, Russia, Costa Rica and Italy, and given keynote talks for a variety of audiences, incuding the American Institute of Architects, the University of Tennessee, and the Prayer Vigil for the Earth on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.  He was asked to give a talk on sustainability and spirituality at the Russian Academy of Science to scientists from around the world.  He was U.S. delegate to an OECD meeting on sustainable development indicators in Rome in December of 1999 and led the US team on information for decision-making for the CSD 9 meetings at the United Nations in March and April of 2001.  He represented the US at the expert meetings of the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment in Germany, and United Nations meetings in Costa Rica, Long Island, NY and Ottawa, Canada.  He was on the National Research Council committee on Material Flow Accounting, the advisory boards of the Calvert-Henderson Quality of Life Indicators, the International Sustainability Indicators Network, and a participant in the Consulting Group on Sustainable Development Indicators convened by the IInternational Institute for Sustainable Development.

Mr. Berry began his career as an aconomist with the Canadian Department of Energy Mines and Resources (now Resources Canada).  In the 1970's he was a principal in a corporation designing computer controls for energy management of large buildings and factories and later ran an international trading company in Korea and Equador, trading in a wide range of materials and manufactured goods.  He joined the US Department of the Interior in 1991 and resigned in 2001 to become an independent consultant.  He has performed on Korean and American television and radio including live performances on National Public Radio's "The Prairie Home Companion."  Mr. Berry will be speaking at the Shumei International Institute 2nd Anniversary celebration on May 23rd, at 2:00 p.m., in the Sanctuary building in Crestone, CO.
