Marlow Brooks featured artist for November and December at Shumei International;

Symposium October 30th

Calligrapher Marlow Brooks will have work on display at the Shumei Gallery in Crestone for the months of November and December. A symposium with Marlow will be on Sunday October 30th starting a 3pm. A reception will follow.

Marlow’s work has appeared in solo shows in Canada, the United States, and in major exhibitions with Kobun Otogawa Roshi and Shibata Sensei, the Imperial Bowmaker of Japan. Her calligraphy has traveled for the last seven years to international exhibitions in China, Japan, and Korea and she recently received an outstanding award for calligraphy in Shanghai. Marlow was also recently invited to join the Art of Ink Society with a new show in Thailand this November. In her words, “when I started meditating 34 years ago, I could no longer paint in the same way: meditation began to open a part of myself I had no language for. So I stopped for a while and discovered Oriental calligraphy, the highest art form of China, Japan, and Korea. The powerful images in black and white spoke to me deeply and I threw myself into learning the ancient discipline in depth.

Now, 30 years later, I am interested in bringing the ancient calligraphic images together with the painting and color I pursued in my earlier days.” Her work has been published in numerous books and is featured in J.R. Worsley’s forthcoming posthumous book on Chinese classical medicine, The Spirits of the Points. She is a practicing Buddhist, and meditation teacher. She is on the Arts faculty of Deer Park Institute in Bir, India and also teaches the Psychology of the Five Elements, Calligraphy, and Buddhist Meditation at Naropa University.

Come meet Marlow and learn more about this talented artist and her art on Sunday October 30th starting at 3pm to 5pm. This event is free to the public, please visit www.shumeicrestone.org or call 256-5284 for more information. The Shumei gallery is open every day 9 to 5pm. 4 for further information.
