Have you ever been struck by the raw beauty of an aged tree or the graceful bird perched on its uppermost branch? These natural images are what inspire local metalsmith, Rocky Hedstrom, in creating his art jewelry. Rocky has been a professional jeweler since 1996, working in the Vail and Aspen markets for almost a decade before settling down in Crestone in 2005. Perhaps best known for his extreme technical skills, Rocky has constructed numerous custom pieces for Crestone residents, most notably an assortment of eclectic wedding rings.

Behind this technical craftsman, however, lies an artist visually and tactilely recreating nature’s sensuality in his jewelry. Rocky’s latest works include engraved scenes, textured metal and polished stones, all of which recall inspiration from nature. With his engraved scenes, in particular, he portrays natural aspects of a situation that invoke a sense of awe and wonderment. For example, one of his engravings, “Resolute,” depicts a solitary blackbird atop a livestock fence. In this piece, Rocky captures the moment the blackbird's posture shifts to counter a gust of wind. The respect and admiration that one may experience while watching the blackbird is what Rocky infuses into a beautiful, durable and portable reminder. In this respect, Rocky continues jewelry's tradition of symbolism and communication while adding an element of natural connection.

A selection of Rocky’s jewelry will be on display at Shumei International Institute during the month of April. Rocky will give a talk on his craft and inspirations on Sunday, April 18th from 3 to 5 p.m. A wine and cheese reception will accompany his presentation.
