Shumei International Institute, in collaboration with the Hazlerig Music House, hosts
Impromptu on Friday April 9th at 7pm. Impromptu, a Denver based band, will bring a beautifully fresh and creative approach to a vintage sound to Shumei International.
Their music encompasses European Gypsy styles melded with American Jazz and a touch of the rest of the world to create a truly unique listening experience. Impromptu’s live performances are high energy and mesmerizing, leaving audiences awe struck by the group’s combination of authenticity, creativity, and virtuosity.
Violinist Katie Glassman studied Gypsy Jazz in France with the renowned violinist Didier Lockwood. Upon her return she met Guitarist M’hamad El Menjra, a native of Morroco who was studying jazz in Denver. Growing up in Morroco and France, M’hammad was already well versed in Arabic, Flamenco, and European Gypsy jazz music.
When they decided to look for a band Katie suggested an old high-school friend to play bass, Charles Mertens. Charles and Katie both attended the Denver School of Arts where they studied classical music and jazz in a high-school setting. Impromptu will be joined by our very own local Andy Skellenger on Tabla!
Impromptu is a band of diverse styles. While they are primarily rooted in Gypsy and American jazz, listeners can expect to hear many other musical influences such as Latin, African, Klezmer, Arabic, and Indian stylings. The band performs concerts, swing dances, workshops, and multi-media presentations on the life of Django Reinhardt.
Please note, Impromptu will be a quartet for this performance as trumpet player Gabriel Mervine will unable to attend.
Tickets for the concert are a $12 suggested donation , and all proceeds benefit the artist directly. For information call 719/256-5284 or visit www.shumeicrestone.org.
