The Taiko Drum Gifting Ceremony

Shumei International Institute (S.I.I.) recently donated a Taiko Drum to the local Crestone Charter School, on November 10th of 2003. Taiko classes were begun by Mr. Hirano, a Shumei Taiko member, at the S.I.I. center in July, of 2003. At the present time, there are classes for adults and classes for children two times each week. There was a Taiko Drum gifting ceremony at the school. Many people attended, including the S.I.I. Taiko class, the other students, teachers, the president of C.C.S. and S.I.I staff. Mr. Ihara, SII Director, explained how the symbol "+", a Chinese character, means 10 and stands for a connection between East and West. That day was the 10th of November. Then, the students attending our Shumei Taiko class played the Taiko drums and S.I.I. staff were each given presents from all of the C.C.S. members. I was touched that Reynold Bean, the Principle of C.C.S., was so impressed with tears in his eyes and was at a loss for words because the student's Taiko drumming had so improved and the sound touched everyone.
