4th Year of Shumei Art Symposia

Mark your calendars for another year of art symposia at the Shumei International Institute (SII) in Crestone, CO!  We have made a few changes this year which we hope will make each symposium easier to plan for and attend.  Shumei is working with Insight Art Connection (IAC) to coordinate exhibits and schedule symposia.  IAC helps organizations build their community presence by supporting local and regional art.

Crestone artist Bill Ellzey provided the vision behind the Shumei art symposia project now entering it’s fourth year.  Bill will remain closely involved with IAC throughout the year.  Shumei’s founder Mokichi Okada said that the purpose of art is to elevate our spirits. It is in this spirit that Shumei supports the arts and strives to make art an integral part of life and accessible to all.

"Fostering an Appreciation for Art and Beauty" is one of the corner stones of Shumei philosophy.  The Shumei Artist Symposia, begun in 2004 at Shumei International Institute (SII), brings art and artists from the region to the Crestone community and visitors from the surrounding San Luis Valley.  More than art exhibits alone, the symposia provides a forum for artists and art lovers to interact.  The symposia gives artists the opportunity to show how they do their work and explain why they do it.  After three years in a format of programs every Saturday afternoon from May through September, the 2007 season has been changed to year-around exhibits and presentations.  The new format allows artists to show their work for longer periods of time, a month or two, and for visitors to have more chances to see the exhibits and attend presentatioins.

The schedule for the remainder of 2007 is printed at the bottom of this article.  Be sure to mark every third Sunday afternoon at 3:00, from July to November, and join us for inspiring sessions, workshops and exhibitions with some of the best artists in southern Colorado!  Watch the Crestone Eagle for an article about each month’s featured artist, specific times and program.  The SII Art Symposia series is made possible by generous donations from the community and from Shumei members around the world.  Please consider supporting this culturally enriching initiative, and remember: buying artwork is one of the best ways to demonstrate your support for local artists!
